Northwest Shells

Molluscan Biodiversity in Washington and Southern British Columbia

Following is a list of mollusks observed in the Pacific Northwest region of Washington State and southern British Columbia.  The legend indicates select sites where we have accumulated extensive lists to help determine the habitat range of Pacific Northwest species.   This includes any identified species found living or dead.  These are not complete lists as we are always finding new species to add.  We will also be adding more sites and additional information in the future. Click on details to find an informational page on that site which includes a list of the species found.  Some sites fall in the transition zone between major bodies of water and could be placed in either category.  We simply chose one to simplify the legend.

Where only a genus is listed, the individual species has yet to be identified.  If more than one location is given in this instance, it possibly represents more than one species in this genus.  We try to include the most updated name changes.  For a list of recent changes click here.

Click on    to view photos of the species.  Scale line in photos is 1cm unless otherwise noted.  Most photos are of the more average looking specimen you might find, not the "perfect" specimen.   Photos of live animals are indicated as such.

Additional Northwest species are listed for which we have a photo but no site data added as yet.   Photos of some additional intertidal marine fauna and land & freshwater snails are included at the end of the list but are not tracked by location.  Identification pages provide a quick reference to help identify specimens you may see.    Please note that several of these sites are protected habitats and shellfish harvesting/collecting is not allowed.  This is observational data only to study the range in biodiversity.

Thank you to all members who provided specimens to be photographed for this page
